Reducing Student Stress – Learning How to Advocate for Yourself

In this session students will learn how to advocate for themselves. Students are dealing with challenges that are unprecedented amid COVID-19 and are faced with stressful situations that require them to advocate for their rights as students. This session will help students learn how to have difficult conversations when faced with stressful situations. We will look for experts that can provide students with tips on how to engage in difficult conversations when faced with challenges in life and learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Facilitators:

Tanysha Klassen is the Chairperson of the British Columbia Federation of Students and has years of experience in advocating for post-secondary students across British Columbia, including campaigning against increased tuition fees, poor government funding of the post-secondary sector, and access to affordable and open-source textbooks. Tanysha began their journey in the student union movement at the Douglas (College) Students’ Union in 2016 and has continued to fight for affordable, accessible, post-secondary education and students’ rights.

Sarah Segal is the Students’ Advocate staff member at Vancouver Island University Students Union. Sarah provides support and advocacy to students seeking to resolve issues they face with the institution. Sarah helps students navigate existing institutional policies and procedures, and develop an approach to difficult conversations that is collaborative and solution-oriented.
